Introduction
"Babylon" is a new song by Taylor Swift, taken from her album The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, and released with an official lyric video on her YouTube channel. Few place names carry as much weight as Babylon — the ancient city of wealth, wonder and excess — and Swift reaches for it to give this song a glittering, dramatic backdrop. On this page you will find the complete song details and credits, a short summary of the song's meaning in our own words, the official lyric video and answers to the questions listeners ask most about this release.
The Song
"Babylon" is theatrical pop with a decadent streak. The ancient city works as a mirror for a modern world of fame, rumour and luxury, where everything shines and everybody is watching, and where desire and ambition move through crowded, noisy rooms. Swift has always loved a setting that can hold a whole feeling, and Babylon lets her build a song that feels rich and restless at the same time — beautiful on the surface, with something more complicated moving underneath the gold.
The Artists
Taylor Swift's great gift is turning very large ideas — fame, love, reputation, time — into songs that still feel personal, and "Babylon" is a fine example of that instinct. Rather than keeping the camera close, she steps back and paints an empire, trusting her listeners to find themselves inside it. It is the work of a writer in her showgirl era, comfortable with glamour and spectacle, but always interested in what the spectacle hides. The Encore chapter of The Life of a Showgirl gives her room to play with exactly this kind of grand, symbolic songwriting.

Babylon — Lyrics & Meaning
In our own summary, "Babylon" uses the ancient city as a mirror for the modern world of celebrity — dazzling, excessive and full of talk, a place where reputations are built and traded in public. Beneath the glitter, the song reflects on desire, image and the cost of living inside a world that never stops watching. And because Babylon is remembered as an empire that fell, its name carries a quiet warning inside the sparkle: everything that shines is not built to last.
